FROM PUMPKIN PAPERS TO PENTAGON PAPERS: FAMOUS TRIALS OF THE COLD WAR AND VIETNAM

A famous trial is not just a legal event. It is a window on the issues, history, and culture of its time. In four sessions our course will first focus on the Cold War through the trials of accused spies Alger Hiss and Julius and Ethel Rosenberg. Then we will explore the Vietnam war period and anti-war movement with the tumultuous trial of “The Chicago Eight” and the Pentagon Papers case, an extremely important freedom of the press case, together with the related criminal trial of Daniel Ellsberg.
